MathHero: An Educational Game in Algebra for Grade 7 Students
The offline educational mobile game named MathHero is intended to provide students with an additional and helpful learning approach. It is an offline game that will assist the Grade 7 students to deal with their difficulties in understanding algebra lessons in an interesting way. The game can serve as an additional form of learning that could enhance student’s knowledge in Algebra. Furthermore, the students can play the game repeatedly which will help them in memorizing the essential algebra solving-problem rules, concepts, techniques, and formulas. The game can also help mathematics teachers in teaching the subject’s most difficult topic.
The main objective of developers in
developing the project is to develop and implement an educational mobile game
for the Grade 7 students that aims to help them in their difficulties in
understanding Algebra lessons. The developers wanted to create a game that
could be used as a supplement for students to enhance their knowledge in topics
such as operation in integers, solving equations with integers, identifying
algebraic expressions, evaluating algebraic expressions, and solving
fundamental operations with polynomials. Furthermore, the developers’ objective
is to create a game with an interesting story, exciting gameplay, informative
contents, and appealing graphic design that could catch the interest of
students to play the game and learn from it.
The educational game “MathHero” will be
played by the Grade 7 students. Upon playing the game, the player can choose
either two of the characters named Poly and Nomia. The game revolves around
these characters who need to complete the components of their grandfather’s
mystical amulet so they can wipe out the COVID-19 Virus that attacked their
community. There are four stages in the game, each with four levels. The player
must complete each level by answering the algebra problems correctly. Every
stage has a distinctive challenging gameplay. The challenges in the game are
specifically tailored to the following algebra topics: Fundamental operation
with Integers, identifying algebraic expressions, evaluating algebraic
expressions, and solving fundamental operations with polynomials. The player
must get the correct answer for each problem to earn crystals. In each stage,
the player must acquire the required crystals to collect the initial part of
the amulet. For stage 1 and 2, 3 the player will only have three lives for each
level. Some problems have a timer where the player must answer before the timer
expires. If the player's answer to the question is incorrect, one life will be
deducted from the current level. When the timer expires, the current level will
be automatically over. If there are no more lives left, the game will be over,
and the level will reset with new math problems or questions. For stage 3, the
player will be given time to think about and solve the problem before getting
the answer on the gameplay. There are only three lives for each level. If there
are no more lives left, the level will reset with new math problems or
questions. For stage 4, a timer will be issued per problem in each level. Every
incorrect answer will cost a time reduction. If the timer expires and the
answer is still wrong, the game will be over.
